Did you know that Bad habits can age you by 12 years

By LINDSEY TANNER, AP Medical Writer - Mon Apr 26, 6:26 PM PDT

CHICAGO - Four common bad habits combined — smoking, drinking too much, inactivity and poor diet — can age you by 12 years, sobering new research suggests.

The findings are from a study that tracked nearly 5,000 British adults for 20 years, and they highlight yet another reason to adopt a healthier lifestyle.

Overall, 314 people studied had all four unhealthy behaviors. Among them, 91 died during the study, or 29 percent. Among the 387 healthiest people with none of the four habits, only 32 died, or about 8 percent.

The risky behaviors were: smoking tobacco; downing more than three alcoholic drinks per day for men and more than two daily for women; getting less than two hours of physical activity per week; and eating fruits and vegetables fewer than three times daily.

These habits combined substantially increased the risk of death and made people who engaged in them seem 12 years older than people in the healthiest group, said lead researcher Elisabeth Kvaavik of the University of Oslo.

The study appears in Monday's Archives of Internal Medicine.

The healthiest group included never-smokers and those who had quit; teetotalers, women who had fewer than two drinks daily and men who had fewer than three; those who got at least two hours of physical activity weekly; and those who ate fruits and vegetables at least three times daily.

"You don't need to be extreme" to be in the healthy category, Kvaavik said. "These behaviors add up, so together it's quite good. It should be possible for most people to manage to do it."

For example, one carrot, one apple and a glass of orange juice would suffice for the fruit and vegetable cutoffs in the study, Kvaavik said, noting that the amounts are pretty modest and less strict than many guidelines.

The U.S. government generally recommends at least 4 cups of fruits or vegetables daily for adults, depending on age and activity level; and about 2 1/2 hours of exercise weekly.

Study participants were 4,886 British adults aged 18 and older, or 44 years old on average. They were randomly selected from participants in a separate nationwide British health survey. Study subjects were asked about various lifestyle habits only once, a potential limitation, but Kvaavik said those habits tend to be fairly stable in adulthood.

Death certificates were checked for the next 20 years. The most common causes of death included heart disease and cancer, both related to unhealthy lifestyles.

Kvaavik said her results are applicable to other westernized nations including the United States.

June Stevens, a University of North Carolina public health researcher, said the results are in line with previous studies that examined the combined effects of health-related habits on longevity.

The findings don't mean that everyone who maintains a healthy lifestyle will live longer than those who don't, but it will increase the odds, Stevens said.

Cleaning pad dulls granite finish...What do i do now??

By Karen Youso , McClatchy/Tribune News

QI used a Magic Eraser on my granite countertop and it appears that I rubbed off the glossy finish. Is there anything I can do to repair the finish or do I need to have a professional look at it?

AUh-oh. Those magic cleaning pads -- they just use water, no detergent or cleanser, to clean -- remove dirt, grime, crayon marks and food stains, all right, but they rely on ultra-fine abrasion. Not exactly sandpaper; they're made of melamine resin foam. The pads cannot be used on surfaces that can be scratched or damaged, such as granite.

Talk to the granite supplier or installer for suggestions on how to restore the granite's surface.

QWhy does my new water heater make the water smell of sulfur? We had it installed and then left for vacation only to return to stinky hot water.

AThe rotten-egg smell comes from hydrogen sulfide gas dissolved in the water. Concentrations of as little as one part per million can result in this odor.

For odor to develop in the water heater, there must be:

--A high concentration of sulfate in the water source.

--Little or no dissolved oxygen in the water.

--Sulfate-reducing bacteria within the water heater. (This bacteria is non-toxic to humans.)

--An excess of active hydrogen in the tank. This is provided by the cathodic action of the anode, a metal rod inside the tank that protects against corrosion.

With these factors present, the hydrogen and sulfur combine to form the hydrogen sulfide gas that gives the rotten-egg odor to the water. Active use of the water heater will reduce the problem, but idle water heaters (during vacations) will allow the accumulation of this hydrogen sulfide gas and aggravate the odor problem.

Smelly water can most easily be eliminated or reduced by replacing the anode with one of less active material (magnesium to aluminum) and then chlorinating the water heating system.

Do not remove the anode; that would leave the tank unprotected. Although it will not affect safer heater operations, it does shorten its life. This is because the anode acts as a sacrificial rod, thus slowing the corrosion process. By removing the anode you will void any warranty on the water heater.

SEASONAL Flu AND H1N1 VACCINE Update for Lake County

UPDATE December 10, 2009
from the Lake County Health Department

Earlier today, the Illinois Department of Public Health announced that all Illinoisans will be eligible to receive the H1N1 flu vaccination beginning December 15. This announcement increases access to the H1N1 vaccine for Lake County residents, but local providers will have flexibility to determine if it is necessary to continue prioritizing the vaccine for the at-risk populations, based on their needs. The announcement also mentions that pharmacies that have ordered vaccine should be able to provide H1N1 flu vaccinations in the coming weeks.

In light of these changes, the Health Department will expand vaccine availability at its Gurnee clinic beginning December 15.

Appointments for H1N1 vaccinations will be available to all people, six months of age and older, at this location. Please note that many of these appointments have already been filled, but appointments will continue to be accepted and vaccine will continue to be provided at least through the end of January. The vaccinations are offered at no charge.

Gurnee

Advocate Condell Medical Building
1425 Hunt Club Road, Suite 103

Dates: Opening Friday, December 11, and continuing at least through the month of January
Hours: Monday – Friday: 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Saturday – Sunday: 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The patience of all those who have been waiting has been appreciated. It is still very important that people in high priority groups continuing to make appointments either with the Health Department or with their providers to get the vaccine. The vaccine should be available at many more local health care provider facilities, such as retail pharmacies, very soon.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Also, please watch our latest video on the H1N1 flu that was produced by LCTV, the County’s cable television station.

The high priority target population groups for the H1N1 vaccine include:

• Individuals 6 months to 24 years of age
• Caretakers and household contacts of children under 6 months of age
• All pregnant women
• Healthcare and emergency medical services employees
• People 25 to 64 years of age with underlying medical conditions, such as asthma or
diabetes, which put them at high risk for flu-related complications.

H1N1 vaccinations have been produced in several forms such as nasal spray and shots. Health Department vaccination clinic staff will work with residents to determine the best form of vaccine for each individual, based on health needs and vaccine availability. It is also very important that anyone who received a seasonal flu shot this year to bring a record of that vaccination to the H1N1 clinic so staff can determine the best form of vaccine to provide.

Vaccination is the best way to protect yourself and your family against this illness. The H1N1 vaccine is being produced the same way as the seasonal flu vaccine.

We expect the 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccine to have a similar safety profile as seasonal flu vaccines, which have a very good safety track record. Over the years, hundreds of millions of Americans have received seasonal flu vaccines. The most common side effects following flu vaccinations are mild, such as soreness, redness, tenderness or swelling where the shot was given. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will be closely monitoring for any signs that the vaccine is causing unexpected adverse events and we will work with state and local health officials to investigate any unusual events.

The CDC has created a series of Frequently Asked Questions about the 2009 H1N1 Influenza A Vaccine Safety, including information on Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) and Thimerosal.

General Questions and Answers on 2009 H1N1 Influenza A Vaccine Safety
Will the 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccines be safe? Are there any side effects to the 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccine? Are there some people who should not receive this vaccine? How will the 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccines be monitored for safety? Will the 2009 H1N1 vaccines that are currently recommended contain adjuvants? More…

General Questions and Answers on Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS)
What is GBS? What causes GBS? Who is at risk for developing GBS? Do vaccines cause GBS? How common is GBS, and how common is it after people are vaccinated for seasonal influenza? What happened in 1976 with GBS and the swine flu vaccine? Why did some people develop GBS after they received the 1976 swine flu vaccine? More…

General Questions and Answers on Thimerosal
What is thimerosal? What are preservatives and why are they used in vaccines? Will the 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccine contain thimerosal? I have concerns about the use of thimerosal. Is thimerosal still being used? Is thimerosal safe when used as a preservative in vaccines? More…

What You Can Do

Practice Healthy Habits
In addition to getting your seasonal flu shot, help prevent the spread of flu in the workplace, schools and throughout the community by:

• Washing your hands frequently
• Staying home if you are sick
• Covering your cough and sneeze

People with flu-like symptoms should stay home from school, work and social gatherings until 24 hours after resolution of their fever. People are more contagious when they have a fever, so staying home during this time is especially important to not spread the flu to coworkers, friends or fellow students.

Volunteer The Health Department is also recruiting volunteers for its Lake County Medical Reserve Corps to help with H1N1 flu prevention. For more information, call: (847) 377-8358.
